Marigold or Rose?

Psalm 73:1 – 3

“Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.  For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

I planted a new flower bed in my backyard this spring. I worked on the flower bed for days because I wanted to plant 6 new roses, which I did, but along with the roses I planted some marigolds. Five of the roses I planted died and the one that is still alive is struggling but the marigolds are thriving and blooming like nobody’s business.

I’m sure if my one struggling rose could talk it would be angry, envious and jealous of the marigolds. If that one rose had eyes, it would be sick of seeing vanilla colored marigolds blooming and taking over the space that was meant for the rose.

Here’s the deal; marigolds are perennials, they die after their blooming season. They do not have longevity of live. They are here, blooming and looking beautiful one season and in the trash the before the next season is over. On the other hand, roses are annuals; they live and bloom for years. I have some roses that are almost 20 years old. As long as I can keep my one surviving rose alive during the winter season, it will live and bloom next season and for years to come plus, the rose will get stronger as it lives through the winter seasons.

My marigolds are like the rich wicked people in this life; oh, they are living well now, they are wealthy, rich, attractive and carefree…today, but how about long-term? Those of us who are in Christ are like the rose; we may be struggling, but we have been promised abundant life in this age and eternal life in the one to come. The wicked don’t have those promises to lean and depend on.

It is easy to see the arrogant wicked people and feel the pang of jealousy or envy but we can’t allow what we see in them to cause us to lose our hope in God. We can’t allow their seemingly carefree life to cause us to think our goal of keeping our hearts pure before the Lord is in vain (Ps. 73:12 – 14).

We must remember that there is more to live than just money, fame and fortune. There is love, peace, joy, contentment, integrity, honesty, hope and truth, all found in our relationship with God through Christ Jesus.

You and I may cry out, “Lord, why can’t I have just a little of their money?” But, they may be crying out, “Why can’t I have peace of mind?” See, we only see the outside of the situation; we only see what the camera shows us, we can’t see their hearts but it’s not about what we see, it’s about a relationship with God and believing, even when we’re struggling, that long-term God will always be true to His promises to us.

“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.” II Corinthians 1:20

Hold On Part II

Hold On – Part II

“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have because God has said, ‘Never will I leave your; never will I forsake you.’ So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”’ Hebrews 13:5 – 6

God has told us that he will never leave us; he will always be with us. This is why we don’t have to seek after the things of the world system. We don’t have to love money, fortune or fame. We don’t have to give up our morals nor ethics in order to fit in with the world. We don’t have to go along to get along with everyone else because God the father has made us a promise; ‘I will never leave your; never will I forsake you.’

This means as children of God we can stand and fight just like the Israelites stood and fought at Jericho, using unorthodox methods by the world’s standards. Who marches around a fortified wall and sings in order to bring the wall down? Who show’s love and compassion to the people who are trying to take their jobs, their home or their car? Those who trust in God do because we know, God is with us!

We can hold on when it looks like all is lost because we have confidence that our God is not only with us, but he’s for us! We can be strong and courageous, unswerving and stout-hearted because we know that no matter what happens God is standing beside us to care for us.

Even in the most desperate or difficult times we can keep our lives free from the love of worldly things  and be content with what God has given us because we know that God will provide for all our needs according to his riches in glory through his son, Jesus Christ (Philippians 4:19).

Proverbs 19:23 says it like this: “The fear (respect) of the Lord leads to life: Then one rests content, untouched by trouble.” If we respect the truths of God; that he is with us at all times, that he will supply our needs and that no one can do anything to us that God hasn’t ordained, then we can rest untouched by trouble!

DO NOT GIVE UP NOW! God has been and will continue to be with you.  He sees what you’re going through and he’s right beside you to help you through it. This is not the time or place to give up!  Just keep your eyes fixed on Jesus because he is walking right in front of you; The Holy Spirit is leading, guiding and directing you down the correct path for you. Remember Gods’ hook, “Hold on, I’m here!”

Prayer for Today

February 9, 2015

Father God, you alone are God!  There is no other god besides you. You alone created the heavens and the earth. You alone called forth light and separated light from darkness. You parted the water of the sky from the water of the earth. No one could have done these mighty acts except you!

You Lord God brought everything into being that have or had life. You are the only one who calls forth both destruction and deliverance and they must respond to your call. There is not another God on earth, in the heavens or under the earth. You alone are God!

We, your children, have allowed the world system to teach us to set up things in the earthly realm as our idols. Things made of clay, steel, plastic and wood. Things such as houses, home fixtures, clothes, cars, jobs, credit and money have become idols.

People such as our children, our spouses, our parents, our church leaders and our supervisors have become idols to some of us. We are more concerned about getting their approval than we are concerned about obeying your word.

Some of us have set up intangible things as idols; earthly power, authority and fame. We can’t see or touch these things, but we think we know them when we see them.

Forgive us! It was not our intent to place another God before you. Deliver us from the evil of this world and cleanse our hearts. In Jesus name. Amen.

Prayer for Today

February 3, 2015

Father, as I work to balance my plans for 2015, my family, my job or business and my relationship with you, please help me not to fall into the trap of chasing money, fame or fortune. Chasing after money, fame or fortune has destroyed many lives.

You know what I need, when I need it and how much I need. Therefore my hope is in you. You are my provision already met and you are my prosperity. I refuse to make money, fame or fortune my god.

Lord, help me keep my eyes on you. Guard my heart and my spirit from evil. Let me rejoice in you. You are my righteousness. I will continue to praise your name! In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
